My experience with HomeCamper in Europe

Finca in Spain

What is HomeCamper

It is a platform where you can book camping spots. But these spots are not campsites. These are spots from people like you and me.

Like Airbnb but instead of booking a house or room, you book a spot in their backyard, garden, or farm.

My experience while traveling across Europe over the last 4 months

My wife and I took a few months off and decided to travel with a car and roof tent across Europe. We switched between booking.com, AirBnB, campsites, and HomeCamper.

Our 10 stays between June and September 2022:

  • June, Spain, 19€: We stayed one night at a Finca near L’ampolla. Sleeping between olive trees is just great. Totally silent at night. There was no shower or toilette but we just needed a place to sleep.
  • July, France, 19€: One night near Fougeré. We had a perfect stay in the backyard of an old house where the owner lived. There was a shower and toilette installed in a separate room with its own entrance.
  • July, France, 15€: Near Saint-Wandrille-Rançon at a small farm. We had a good sleep there. Silent and peaceful. The owner's dog visited us from time to time. A small cabin with shower and toilette. Only 2 other campers had the same idea as us to stay there.
  • July, Nederland, 21€: De Mortel was the name of the town. We stayed in the backyard of the house. The meadow was huge. Another camper with family was also there. Had a shower, toilet, and a small kitchen inside of an old mobile home. Pretty cool.
  • July, Germany, 22€: Next to Delmenhorst we had two wonderful nights in the garden of Tom and Ina. Small place behind the house but it was the best shower we had so far. In the building, we found everything we needed.
  • August, Germany, 22€: Wow. A small farm, old, a huge building, and a huge backyard. Standing between trees and not a single thing that we missed there.
  • August, Germany, 23€: Three nights near Wandlitz next to Berlin. It was a place in the garden next to the house. Separate shower and toilette. Far away from any traffic.
  • August, Austria, 22€: The plan was to stay for 5 nights. Unfortunately, we had some problems there. Not with the owner but with their neighbors. It looked like they were not so happy about visitors. I think it was not just about us. They got furious even when the kids got a little bit louder. So we left after the third night.
  • August, Italy, 20€: Two nights which were a little bit strange to us. We were getting introduced to squad toilette. Never had that before. Got a workout for the legs but at first, it was unusual for us. A good spot to visit the town but it was also a hell of mosquitos.
  • September, Italy, 25€: The night before we took the ferry to Greece we had a stay near Castellana Grotte. This was the best. No kidding. A farm. Calm. Quite. An old building looked like an old school with brand new showers and toilets. The owner was so damn cool. Writing this I wish we could have stayed longer. Great experience.

So what is my conclusion

We had some unique experiences. It is a little bit cheaper than campsites. And if you just need a safe spot and don´t need a shower or toilet it´s even cheaper than I wrote. Some countries in Europe don´t provide spots like Greece. But hopefully, they get also involved. IMHO HomeCamper is the way to go if you seek quiet places to camp.

No campsite or any other place brings you such kind of experience.

Wait a second. If you are in Austria try “alpaca camping”. It is very close to HomeCamper. :)
